Advances in Research on Landscape in Language, Society and Cognition

A team of researchers from the University of Chicago, University of Zurich and University of Torino (Philipp Striedl, Cristiana Lucchetti, Sara Racca, Aleksej Tikhonov) organized the ILANSCO conference in September 2024. The conference was received as a great success, bringing together leading experts and young researchers working on interfaces of landscape, space, place on the one hand and language, society and cognition on the other hand. The exchange during and after the conference planted the seed for a dialogue now culminating in an edited volume. Editors are Philipp Striedl, Cristiana Lucchetti, Sara Racca and Aleksej Tikhonov. The volume is going to be published in 2026 with De Gruyter Brill as an open-access book in the series Interdisciplinary Linguistics. It features 12 original contributions from different vantages – linguistics, anthropology, literature – examining ways in which humans interact with landscape. space and place.

This contribution is relevant and necessary, as landscapes are essential for human well-being, while their importance still is to be fully appraised in the humanities and social sciences.
